You’re Sent: Leadership Lessons from Luke 10
You’re not alone in leadership. And you’re not disqualified. You’ve been found by God, loved by Jesus, and filled with the Holy Spirit. That’s the foundation of your calling—and that’s enough.
When Jesus sent out 72 followers in Luke 10, he wasn’t just starting a short-term mission trip. He was offering a model of leadership, discipleship, and trust. These weren’t elite insiders. They were everyday people who said yes to being sent. Just like you.
Let’s explore what Jesus shows us about being sent and leading with purpose.
You Are Part of Something Bigger
“The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.” That’s not a guilt trip—it’s an invitation. Jesus sees a world in need of healing, peace, and good news. So he sends. Not just the twelve. Seventy-two people go ahead of him to places he intends to visit.
You’re included in that mission. Leadership in God’s kingdom is never a solo act. You are part of a team. You’re sent not to impress, but to bless. You go not because you’re fully prepared, but because Jesus is already at work and invites you to join him.
You’re Sent With Vulnerability and Trust
Jesus tells the 72, “Go. I’m sending you out like lambs among wolves.” He doesn’t sugarcoat it. There will be resistance. There will be risk. And you won’t have everything you think you need.
That’s part of the beauty of this calling. You travel light. No purse. No bag. No backup plan. Instead, you trust. You trust that God is enough. That hospitality will meet you. That peace will guide you. That the Spirit will sustain you.
You don’t need to control every detail. You don’t need to chase comfort. You simply need to be faithful and present.
You Offer Peace and Stay Where You’re Welcomed
Jesus doesn’t ask you to stir up conflict or demand attention. He sends you to be a bringer of peace. When you enter a space—whether a home, a conversation, or a community—lead with peace. Let your presence reflect the calm assurance of God’s love.
Stay where you’re welcomed. Don’t look for the better deal. Don’t rush to the next thing. Be faithful where God plants you, even if it’s not what you expected. There’s power in rooted presence.
You Heal, Proclaim, and Expect Resistance
Jesus gives a mission: heal the sick and say, “The kingdom of God has come near.” You’re called to care for bodies and souls. Your leadership isn’t just spiritual talk—it’s tangible action. You bring healing, compassion, justice, and joy.
But not everyone will welcome your presence. Jesus prepares you for that, too. Shake the dust off and move on. Rejection doesn’t define you. Faithfulness does.
You Rejoice in Your Identity, Not Just Your Results
When the 72 return, they are filled with joy. They’ve experienced power. Even demons listened to them! But Jesus redirects their joy. “Don’t rejoice that the spirits submit to you. Rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
Your worth doesn’t come from what you accomplish. It comes from who you belong to.
That truth grounds you. You’re not leading to prove something. You’re leading because you’ve already been claimed by grace. Your identity as a beloved child of God fuels your mission.
You Lead with Joy, Simplicity, and Trust
This chapter gives a rare glimpse of Jesus full of joy. He praises God for revealing the kingdom not to the powerful or elite, but to those with childlike trust.
You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need all the degrees or credentials. You just need to be available. God delights in using those who are humble and open.
