The Prayer Life of Jesus: A Journey Through Lent
Lent is a season of reflection, preparation, and drawing closer to God. As we enter this time, consider the way Jesus approached prayer. His life was marked by an ongoing conversation with the Father, a rhythm of ministry and retreat, of seeking guidance and finding strength. Over the next few weeks, immerse yourself in the prayers of Jesus, allowing them to shape your own practice of prayer.
Lord, Teach Us to Pray
In Luke 11:1, a disciple asks Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray.” This request is both simple and profound. Even those who walked alongside Jesus, witnessing His miracles and hearing His teaching firsthand, longed to grow in their connection with God.
Prayer can sometimes feel daunting. It’s deeply personal and, at times, overwhelmingly mysterious. There may be a fear of doing it wrong, but here’s the good news: you can’t get it wrong. Jesus offers not a rigid formula but a simple and heartfelt guide—what we call the Lord’s Prayer. More than just words to recite, it is a framework for how to approach God with reverence, honesty, and trust.
Four Aspects of Prayer
Jesus’ model prayer highlights four essential dimensions of prayer that can shape our own prayer life:
1. Upward Focus: Honoring God
Jesus begins with, “Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.” Prayer starts with recognizing who God is—God’s holiness, majesty, and plan. It is an opportunity to realign your perspective, shifting your focus from worries to God’s goodness. Calling God “Father” reminds you of His closeness and care, while “hallowed be your name” acknowledges His power and sovereignty.
2. Naming Our Needs: Daily Bread and Forgiveness
Jesus then shifts to the practical: “Give us each day our daily bread.” No request is too big or too small for God. Jesus invites you to bring both physical and spiritual needs before God. This includes asking for provision, but also for forgiveness—both receiving it from God and extending it to others. Prayer not only meets your needs but transforms your heart.
3. Boldness in Prayer: Asking, Seeking, and Knocking
Jesus shares a story about a man persistently knocking on his friend’s door at midnight, seeking bread. The lesson? Persistence matters. “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Bold prayer isn’t about nagging God—it’s about trusting God fully, believing in God’s goodness and perfect timing.
4. Expectant Prayer: Receiving God’s Presence
The Lord’s Prayer concludes with a promise: “How much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” Prayer isn’t just about receiving answers—it’s about receiving God’s presence and power. The greatest gift God gives is himself, shaping and strengthening you for the journey ahead.
The Rhythm of Jesus’ Prayer Life
Throughout his ministry, Jesus maintained a pattern of prayer. In Luke’s Gospel alone, there are sixteen instances where Jesus prays. From Jesus’ baptism to the wilderness, from moments of popularity to times of retreat, Jesus continually sought the Father. Jesus’ prayers weren’t just words spoken; they were a way of being—a deep, abiding relationship with God that fueled His mission.
Just as Jesus took time to withdraw and pray, so too can you. Ministry and retreat go hand in hand. Engaging in prayer isn’t about saying the right words—it’s about being in relationship with the One who calls, equips, and empowers you.
A Story of Trusting God’s Call
There is a story of a young woman who felt called to become a Bible translator in another country. She was certain of this calling, but when she shared it with her longtime boyfriend, he expressed that he didn’t share that same call. Heartbroken, she sought counsel from a trusted professor. When asked what she would do, she responded, “You know exactly what I’m going to do. I just came here to have someone cry with me.”
Like Jesus in the wilderness, she had a choice—stay with comfort or follow God’s call. Prayer isn’t always easy, but it is in prayer that you find clarity, direction, and the strength to trust God’s leading.
Step Into This Season of Prayer
As Lent unfolds, take time to explore Jesus’ prayers. Follow Jesus’ example of drawing near to the Father. Seek Jesus’ guidance, trust Jesus’ provision, pray boldly, and expectantly wait for the Holy Spirit’s presence in your life.
Prayer isn’t about getting the words right—it’s about growing in relationship with God. May this season be one of deepening faith and renewed trust in the One who hears you, loves you, and walks with you every step of the way.
