Episode 350: Hope on the Horizon
With the onset of Advent and the start of a new liturgical year, we find ourselves once again immersed in the essence of hope and anticipation. As we prepare for the birth of Jesus, Advent offers us an opportunity to find a hope in waiting and watching.
Advent and the Promise of Hope
As the holiday season begins, it’s not uncommon to feel a sense of rush from Thanksgiving directly into Advent. This year, with the first Sunday of Advent coinciding with December 1st, the pace feels brisker than ever. However, amid this whirl of activities, Advent invites us to experience the sacred slow—an opportunity to pause, reflect, and immerse in the theme of hope.
Our series this Advent is an invitation to “Live the Promise of Hope.” We are called to explore these ancient words, not just as historical texts but as living testimonies that speak into our present lives.
Exploring the First Scripture for Advent
Our journey begins with a scripture from Luke 21. Luke speaks of signs in the sun, moon, and stars—cosmic signals of change and hope. While some may interpret these signs literally, we are reminded that they symbolize transformative events in our lives, like the societal shifts seen during the fall of apartheid or the toppling of the Berlin Wall. These changes remind us of God’s larger narrative at work, even amidst chaos.
Our conversation leads us to a reflection on patience. In times of waiting, especially during life’s turbulent changes, followers of Jesus are invited to keep watch, looking for Jesus. Whether dealing with historical upheavals or personal trials, the call remains—to be patient and alert, trusting in God’s timing.
Stories of Jesus Showing Up in Unexpected Ways
Waiting for Jesus isn’t merely a passive exercise. It calls us to actively notice Jesus’ presence in everyday situations. Through storytelling, we’re reminded that Jesus often appears in unexpected places and moments. It’s in these daily encounters that we perceive the divine presence, urging us to respond and reflect that love to those around us.
Practical Reminders for Active Waiting
Hope in Advent is not idle but rather an active waiting. It’s about being steadfast, vigilant, and spiritually prepared. Maintaining focus through prayer and community helps us withstand trials and nourishes our hope with God’s grace.
Sustaining hope also means trusting God’s timing, which may not align with our immediate desires but assures a much larger plan at play. God’s promise unfolds in ways we might not fully grasp, but through faith and practice, we prepare ourselves to witness it when it appears.
Advent Waiting
Advent is a sacred time of cultivating hope and anticipation for Jesus’ coming. As we journey together through this season, may we remain alert and responsive to Jesus’ presence in our lives.
