Blessed are the Meek
“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5)
Meek does not mean weak.
Now that we have that out of the way, what is meant by “blessed are the meek?”
If what comes to mind when you hear the word meek is weak, harmless, or spiritless, it’s time to reconsider. If what you think of is someone who is a “doormat,” quiet, timid, or does not want to offend anyone, let’s reframe it in the biblical understanding of meek.
The word for meek in Greek is one of the great Greek ethical words. It is used to describe two persons in the scripture. Moses in Numbers 12:3 and Jesus in Matthew 11:29.
Moses defied the might of Egypt and Jesus did not cower to a powerful Roman official. Neither of them ever showed the slightest signs of being weak, harmless, or spiritless. Both were courageous in the face of adversity and completely surrendered to the will of God.
Fruit of the Spirit
It is obvious that the word meek means far more than what we think it means today. Maybe the best word to describe meek is gentleness. As you know, gentleness is a fruit of the spirit. Blessed are the meek, the gentle. Blessed are those who are always angry at the right time, who have every instinct, impulse, and passion under control, and who are humble, they are partners with God in the redemption of all creation.
Listen and explore the biblical understanding of “blessed are the meek.”
