Blessed are They Who Mourn
“Blessed are they who mourn for they shall be comforted. – Matthew 5:4
You’re likely not a stranger to the things that get said when people are mourning. Whether it is the loss of a loved one, the loss of employment, grieving people you love moving, or simply the pace of change. One of the often repeated phrases shared when there is loss or grief goes something like this: “Our thoughts and prayers are with you.”
As much as people want to offer condolences, those words fall empty. Regardless of how bad you feel, mourning is more than expressing thoughts and prayers.
Mourning is described as the kind of grief which takes hold of a person so deeply it cannot be hidden. Mourning implies deep sorrow.
New Order
As we discussed in our previous two episodes, in Matthew, the kingdom of heaven refers to God’s new order. When we read the beatitudes as a whole, we discover that the great blessing is to be sons and daughters of God.
Listen and explore three ways the blessed are those who mourn. And remember, when you experience God’s love, understand your brokenness, and are moved to action, you will receive strength, power, and encouragement to become more who God has created you to be. That’s called being blessed…even when you’re mourning.
