Episode 050:
What gets in the way of
Disciple-Making?
January 15, 2019
What behaviors and church cultures are standing in the way of leading people to follow Jesus?
Sometimes the behaviors we see around us and even the behaviors we exhibit can get in the way of leading well. We start this episode by identifying 13 behaviors and cultures in the church that impede disciple-making.
We start with what gets in the way, because often what gets in the way becomes the way. You’re invited to reflect on the behavior and cultural norms of the local congregation you lead so you can take a step to lead well and guide people toward disciple-making.
Then, we identify the first step of courageous leadership.
While the behaviors we outline may be familiar stumbling points for all church leaders, the invitation to practice courageous leadership might surprise you. And, we’ll warn you, it’s not something most of us pause to consider. Courageous leadership isn’t for the faint of heart.
Before you listen, let’s name the obvious thing that gets in the way of disciples making disciples: if you’re not a follower of Jesus, you’re going to have a difficult time making disciples.
Disciples make disciples. We end this episode with “homework” to apply your learning and invite you to the next steps.
